GA4 via GTM

This guide walks you through connecting Epigraph Analytics to Google Analytics 4 using Google Tag Manager.

📘

Requirements

Before you begin, make sure you have:

  • An Epigraph solution implemented on your website
  • A Google Tag Manager container installed on your site
  • A Google Analytics 4 property
  • Publish access to your GTM container
  • Admin access to your GA4 property

Phase 1: Import the GTM Template

Epigraph provides a pre-built Google Tag Manager template containing all the tags, triggers, and variables needed to track Epigraph events.

Step 1: Download the Template

Choose the template that matches your current GTM setup:

Your SituationTemplate to Download
Already tracking GA4 with GTMGTM Template for Existing Users
New to GTM or not yet tracking GA4GTM Template for New Users
📘

Not sure which to choose?

If you're currently sending events to GA4 through GTM (you have existing GA4 tags), use the template for Existing Users. If you're just getting started with GTM or your GA4 is set up differently, use the template for New Users.

Step 2: Import the Template into GTM

  1. Open Google Tag Manager and select your container
  2. In the left sidebar, click Admin
  3. Under the Container column, click Import Container
  4. Click Choose Container File and upload the .json file you downloaded
  5. Select your workspace (typically Default Workspace)
  6. Under Choose an import option, select:
    • Merge
    • Then choose Rename conflicting tags, triggers, and variables
  7. Review the summary of changes
  8. Click Confirm to complete the import

Step 3: Additional Setup for New GTM Users

If you used the New Users template, complete this additional step:

  1. In GTM, go to Tags
  2. Create a new tag
  3. Set Tag Configuration to Google Tag (under Google Analytics)
  4. For the Tag ID, select the variable "GA4-Variable (Insert your G-ID Here)"
  5. Set the trigger to All Pages
  6. Save the tag

Phase 2: Update the GA4 Measurement ID

After importing, you need to point the template to your GA4 property:

  1. In GTM, go to Variables in the left sidebar
  2. Find the variable named "GA4-Variable (Insert your G-ID Here)"
  3. Click to edit it
  4. Replace G-XXXXXXX with your actual GA4 Measurement ID (format: G-XXXXXXXXXX)
  5. Click Save
📘

Where to find your GA4 Measurement ID

In Google Analytics, go to AdminData Streams → select your web stream → copy the Measurement ID (starts with G-).

Test and Publish

  1. Click Preview in the top right of GTM
  2. Navigate to a page with your Epigraph implementation
  3. Interact with the 3D Viewer, AR button, or Configurator
  4. Verify that Epigraph events are firing in the Tag Assistant
  5. Once confirmed, click SubmitPublish to make changes live

Phase 3: Grant Epigraph GA4 Access

After you've published the GTM template, grant our team temporary access to complete the setup:

  1. In Google Analytics, go to Admin
  2. Under Account Access Management, click Add Users (or use Property Access Management)
  3. Add this email: [email protected]
  4. Set the role to Editor
  5. Click Add
📘

About Access Levels

We need Editor access temporarily to create custom dimensions and audiences. Once setup is complete (typically 4–6 weeks), you can downgrade this to Analyst or Viewer level.

Confirm with Epigraph

Let your Epigraph contact know that you've:

  1. ✅ Imported and published the GTM template
  2. ✅ Updated the GA4 Measurement ID
  3. ✅ Granted Editor access to [email protected]

We'll take it from here and notify you when your dashboard is ready.

What Happens Next

Once we confirm access, our team will:

  1. Create 15 custom dimensions in your GA4 property to capture Epigraph-specific data
  2. Build 10 audience segments for enhanced user targeting (e.g., "AR Users," "Configurator Completers")
  3. Configure your Looker Studio dashboard with KPIs tailored to your implementation

Timeline: Your dashboard will be ready within 4–6 weeks of confirmed setup. We'll reach out with a link and walkthrough.

Events We Track

Once implemented, Epigraph Analytics automatically captures:

Event CategoryExamples
3D ViewerModel loads, rotation, zoom, time spent
AR ExperienceAR launches, QR scans, session duration
ConfiguratorOption selections, configuration completions, add-to-cart
ButtonsClick-throughs, engagement rates
HotspotsHotspot opens, interactions, dwell time

Troubleshooting

Events aren't appearing in GA4

  • Check GTM Preview mode: Make sure Epigraph tags are firing when you interact with the 3D viewer or AR button
  • Verify the GA4 ID: Confirm the variable contains your correct Measurement ID (starts with G-)
  • Wait 24–48 hours: GA4 can take time to process new events, especially for custom dimensions

I don't see the Epigraph variable in GTM

  • Confirm the import completed successfully
  • Check that you selected Merge (not Overwrite) during import
  • Try re-importing the template

I'm not sure if my template is for existing or new users

Use the Existing Users template if you already have GA4 event tags in GTM. Use the New Users template if this is your first time setting up GA4 tracking through GTM.
